Testing & Performance Analysis of BROMOCO's Copper/Brass Protective Coatings

Copper and brass are highly esteemed materials for their aesthetics and durability. However, these metals are susceptible to corrosion and loss of luster in certain environments, which can compromise their lifespan and visual appeal. BROMOCO has developed advanced metal protective coatings to address these issues, with BCP2991 standing out as a flagship product specifically designed to protect copper and brass. This article explores the electrochemical mechanisms of copper and brass corrosion, the protective performance of BCP2991, as well as the results of field testing and long-term performance analysis, concluding with discussions on its environmental impact and practical applications.

Electrochemical Mechanisms of Copper and Brass Corrosion

The corrosion of copper and brass primarily occurs through chemical reactions with the environment. In the maritime climate of the UK and the prevalent rainy weather conditions, copper reacts with carbon dioxide, oxygen, and water in the air to form a turquoise-colored compound similar to malachite, commonly known as copper patina. Outdoor copper components in regions exposed to acid rain may also develop a mixture of cuprous chloride, copper sulfide, copper sulfate, and copper carbonate. Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, undergoes similar corrosion processes. Additionally, brass experiences dezincification, where zinc is selectively leached out, weakening the metal structure.

How BROMOCO BCP2991 Coatings Prevent Copper and Brass Corrosion

BCP2991 is BROMOCO's flagship product designed specifically to protect copper and brass building materials, aiming to suppress these chemical reactions. The coating forms a barrier that isolates the metal surface from environmental factors. This transparent protective layer not only preserves the unique visual charm of copper and brass but also creates a hydrophobic layer for waterproofing and stain resistance. Two versions of finishes, glossy and matte, also expand the designer's color palette. Additionally, BCP2991 contains corrosion inhibitors and UV protectors to safeguard against corrosion and UV damage, maintaining the integrity and aesthetics of the metal.

Model Testing and Performance Analysis of BROMOCO BCP2991 Copper/Brass Protective Coatings

The effectiveness of BCP2991 can be verified through model testing. We prepared copper pipes commonly used in construction as shown in the figure. The left half of the copper pipe is coated with BCP2991 and exposed to natural weathering for two days. The results were clear: the coated portion of the bottom pipe retained its original state, while the untreated right side lost its luster, turned black, and showed signs of chemical reactions and corrosion.

Performance analysis of BCP2991 based on this model testing revealed its excellent protective capability. After just two days of exposure to natural weathering conditions, the untreated copper pipe exhibited significant degradation. The uncoated right side, due to oxidation and other chemical reactions, showed noticeable loss of luster and darkening. This stark contrast highlights the vulnerability of untreated copper surfaces to environmental factors.

In contrast, the left half of the bottom pipe treated with BCP2991 showed no signs of loss of luster or corrosion. The coating effectively prevented the metal from reacting with moisture, oxygen, and pollutants in the air. This indicates that BCP2991 forms a robust barrier, inhibiting the electrochemical processes that cause corrosion and preserving the beauty and structural integrity of the metal.

Key performance indicators from model testing include:

Rust resistance: The coated copper surface retains its luster and remains rust-free, demonstrating strong resistance to environmental pollutants.

Corrosion inhibition: The treated portion shows no signs of corrosion, highlighting the coating's ability to prevent oxidation and chemical reactions.

Surface preservation: BCP2991 coating maintains the original state of copper, preventing surface darkening and degradation.
